Titanium dioxide & zinc oxide are mineral (physical) filters commonly used in sunscreen formulations. They work primarily by reflecting and, to a lesser extent, absorbing light. They are commonly used in their “nano” form.
Nanoparticles are extremely small-sized particles measuring from 1 and 100 nanometers. In sun screen formulations, they provide a number of advantages:
- better skin surface coverage due to their reduced size
- easier to spread for better cosmetic compliance
- transparent for no unaesthetic white cast (common in larger, “non-nano” mineral filters)
Due to their very small size, however, there has been some concern that they can penetrate the skin, causing potential side effects or damage to deeper layers. In addition, upon penetration and activation by UV, they could form free radicals that damage surrounding cells.
Numerous studies have however concluded that:
- Nanoparticles do not penetrate skin in any significant quantities
- Protective surface coating of nanoparticles dramatically reduces the potential for photoactivity.
